On 15 June 2019, the member of the 5th Gogova Foundation Artists Residency Yanina Chernykh introduced her solo project at the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Karachay-Cherkessia.
The project titled The River Will Flow is a conversation between the mythology of the place and the personal mythology of the artist. As part of the show, the artist mixes together such familiar media as animation and stone sculptures, as if prompted by the surrounding landscape and emphasising the propinquity of the natural and the cultural in the local context that prevails over the widely-discussed dichotomy.
The parts of the project are linked by one narrative. Simultaneously playing animated films show different stories assembled from the same semantic elements that dovetail into each both visual- and plot-wise. Works on paper and sculptures bring to the fore, and give shape to the original supporting structures of the narrative, creating a tangible framework for the intangible digital format.
